PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

1.WHAT IS FAMU+DRS PREP(FAMU PRE-FRESHMAN ENRICHMENT PROGRAM)?​


FAMU+DRS PREP is an intensive mathematics-based pre-college enrichment program, which provides educational enrichment opportunities for high ability middle and high school students

2.WHY ATTEND?


Explore and prepare for careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

3.WHO CAN ATTEND?


Middle school and high school students who are high achieving and are interested in learning about science, technology, engineering and mathematics professions. Students applying must be willing to attend an entire six weeks of their summer vacation. Minorities and females are especially encouraged to apply.  Priority is given to students who are economically and socially disadvantaged.

4.WHEN DOES IT OCCUR?


June 10 through July 12, 2024 (Monday-Thursday) from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Any field trips are optional and occur on Fridays.

5.WHERE?


All program functions, except for field trips, will be held in classrooms on Florida A&M DRS's Campus and Florida A&M University's Campus.

6.COSTS?


There is no tuition or fee to attend PREP.

1st Year

  • Engineering (Newton’s laws projects)
  • Logic (Mathematical rules of logic)

  • Computer Science (Website development, python – a start to data science)
  • Enrichment (Solving real world problems)

2nd Year

  • Engineering

  • Algebraic Structures
  • Set Theory
  • Computer Science

3rd Year

  • Statistics
  • Data Visualization
  • Technical Writing
  • SAT Preparatory
  • Computer Science​

4th Year

  • SAT
  • Robotics
  • Machine Learning
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • How to study and organize learning
  • Modeling across the curriculum

9.WHO WILL TEACH?


Classes will be taught by professionals that have a focus on STEM-related curriculum. There will also be college students that are driven to mentor and tutor students towards their studies.

10.ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA?


Applicants must currently be 7th, 8th, or 9th-grade students to enter their First Year of FAMU+DRS PREP.
Applicants must have a B or better overall average (C or better if enrolled in honors, enrichment, or gifted and talented classes) in their academic courses during the 2022 - 2023 school year at the time of application. All 7th-grade applicants must have an A average (B or better if enrolled in honors, enriched, or gifted and talented classes).
Applicants must have satisfactory conduct grades throughout the academic year.
