Professional Development

Opportunites for Professional Development in Mathematics

Conferences are a great way to get exposure to new mathematical ideas that you may not see in your classes. It's usually possible to secure some funding for travel to conferences either from the organizers (see below) or from FAMU (please contact Dr. Gunaratne at ajith.gunaratne@famu.edu for inquiries).

Department of Energy Seminars: The Department of Mathematics hosts regular virtual seminars by the Department of Energy national laboratories. These seminars would greatly benefit students by exposing students to new research and topics, deepening their understanding of advanced concepts, stimulating their creative thinking, and informing them of internship and career opportunities. Students will receive further seminar details, such as registration links, in their email.

Joint Mathematics Meetings: The Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) is an annual conference, often called the world's largest gathering of mathematicians, hosted by the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) that takes place in early January every year.

For more information, please visit: 2026 Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM)
Students can also get support for travelling at: Student Travel Funding

Upcoming AMS Sectional Meetings: These meetings are smaller than the annual AMS meeting, offering a more intimate setting for collaboration and knowledge exchange, particularly beneficial for early-career mathematicians.

For more information, please visit: AMS Sectional Meeting

SIAM Conferences: SIAM conferences focus on topics in applied and computational mathematics and applications.

For more information, please visit: SIAM Conferences

Southeastern Analysis Meetings (SEAM): These are annual national conferences in various areas of analysis. The next conference tentatively, will be held on March 13 - 15, 2026 at the University of Richmond.
